Get great, reasonably priced tapas and cava (or sangría, wine, etc.) at El Xampanyet or Euskal Etxea in El Born. Or even cheaper in Poble Sec. Then a take a nice walk around the neighborhoods (especially Barri Gòtic) and visit any corner for gelato.

What’s your favorite restaurant here? What’s so special about it?

I loved El Xampanyet, although the food is incredible throughout the city. My favorites were the “bacalao con tomate” and “pimientos con queso”, and my favorite drink was the “xampanyet”. Great service there and always packed.

What’s your favorite thing to do on a warm Sunday morning in this city?

Coffee and a pastry on any corner. Dip my feet in the Mediterranean in La Barceloneta. Then a nice walk through Parc de la Ciutadella.

What were some of the hidden gems in that city? Why?

There were so many amazing things, something for everyone…

If you’re a fútbol fan, as I am, I’d recommend going to a Barça match and taking the Camp Nou tour. I loved both experiences.

If you’re an art fan, as I am, I enjoyed Fundació Antoni Tàpies (famous Catalan abstract artist), somewhat off the beaten path as far as Barcelona museums go.

I also enjoyed walking through Parc Güell, seeing the great Gaudí architecture, and listening to the busking musicians scattered throughout the park. When I went, the weather happened to be perfect, so the combination of scenery, music, and weather made for a beautiful day.

Anything else you want to add?

– Walk whenever possible. There are things to see along the way.

– Try a café bombón. Google it. You’re welcome.

– Visit La Boqueria.

– Talk to the locals. Barcelona might be the first city I’ve visited where the people have the same idea of hospitality that New Orleans (my home town) does. “Hola, guapa” they say, instead of “Hi, dawlin'” 🙂 People were warm and friendly, and I loved it.
